Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC)

PDLC is bonded film made up of several layers.  A polymer layer with imbedded pockets of liquid crystal molecules sits between two conductive layers.  In the ON/transparent state, a current is applied to the conductive film layers creating an electric field across the polymer layer causing the liquid crystal molecules to align in a direction that allows light to pass through with minimal interference.
When the current is switched off in the OFF/opaque state, the liquid crystal molecules fall out of alignment with each other into an irregular pattern that scatters light passing through the film creating the opaque quality of the film.

Electrochromic Film (EC)

EC is a type of smart glass that produces a dark tint on activation.  The transition process is incremental, allowing the occupant to select between different tint levels that block glare and heat from sunlight more as the tint gets darker.
EC is perfect for exterior glazing systems aimed at reducing heating and cooling costs.  Tint activation can be synchronized with light sensors or scheduled to the times when the building is facing direct sunlight such that the glass will block excess heat and glare at the brightest times of day while switching back to the lowest tint setting when not needed.  The film requires an electrical current only while transitioning, so energy costs are particularly low for this type of smart glass.

Conductive Film

Conductive films are integral to the operation of electrically controlled smart glass along with several other products requiring a current applied over a certain area such as liquid crystal displays, touchscreens, and solar panels.  These films feature high transparency and efficiency in a thin film form factor.  Great care must be placed in the forumlation of ingredients and manufacturing methods, or the resulting film could be defective.

Barrier Film/Nano Film

Barrier films are specially developed films with low permeability to gas and moisure.  Some electrical components require isolation from their surrounding environment to function optimally over their lifetime.  Examples of this include battery packs and photovoltaic cells in solar panels.  Exposure to air and moisture can damage the material over time and require a protective layer such as barrier film to maintain product integrity.
